Thank you from David as bike ride raises over £13,000 for St Cuthbert’s Hospice

After nine years away from one of the UK’s toughest cycling events, entering the 2026 Fred Whitton Challenge back in December may well have been one of my best decisions of the year.

The event itself was everything I expected and more — a cold start, sunshine across the Lakeland fells, incredible scenery, an amazing atmosphere, and an event that was organised superbly from start to finish.

I’m delighted to say I completed the 108-mile course in 7 hours and 47 minutes, climbing over 11,000 feet along the way. By the time I reached the final three climbs of Hardknott Pass, Wrynose Pass and Blea Tarn, ‘difficult’ would be an understatement. Exhausted, cramping, but hugely proud to cross the finish line.

Most importantly, thanks to the incredible generosity of clients, friends, colleagues, suppliers, family and the wider business community, we have now raised over £13,000 and counting for St Cuthbert’s Hospice — a cause that means a great deal to me and my family. I did the ride in memory of a good friend and long-standing client, Simon Toole of Par Petroleum. St Cuthbert’s provided amazing care for Simon and support for his family during his illness. It made all the difference that members of Simon’s family were there in person to support me during the ride.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored, donated, shared posts, offered encouragement, or helped me prepare for the challenge. From training partners, family support on the day, expert bike setup, kit advice, and every message of encouragement along the way — you all played a part, and I genuinely cannot express enough gratitude.

A special thank you also goes to the organisers of the Fred Whitton Challenge for once again delivering an outstanding event that ran like clockwork.

To every individual and organisation who donated — thank you. Your generosity will make a real difference to so many lives.

And yes… there is already a rumour of one final attempt next year to break through the 7½-hour barrier.

Thank you everyone.
